Police Training
The FBI provides comprehensive training
assistance to local and state law enforcement. The goals of this program are to
render training assistance regarding investigative, managerial, technical and
administrative aspects of law enforcement. FBI instructors provide, upon request,
education and training programs throughout the United States to police agencies,
thus contributing to the enhanced professionalism in American Law enforcement.
The FBI also sends local officers to training at the FBI Academy, as discussed
below. The FBI works closely with the Alaska Peace Officers Association, the Alaska
Police Standards Council and many law enforcement agencies to provide quality
training opportunities to the Alaska law enforcement community. Alaska law enforcement
agencies interested in submitting candidates to the FBI National Academy need
to contact the Anchorage Division office at (907) 276-4441 and ask to speak to
the training coordinator, SA Steve Lane.
In Fiscal Year 1998, 107,000
state and local law enforcement officials nationwide were taught by FBI Instructors.
Training is an important program in the FBI's relationships with state and local
law enforcement. FBI National Academy
The FBI
National Academy has long been a vital element in the continuing improvement of
law enforcement standards, knowledge and cooperation throughout the world. It
provides a wide range of leadership and specialized training. Founded in 1935,
the program has graduated 32,121 qualified students through March, 1999. The program
has a world-wide reputation and has graduated 2,165 officers, representing 128
foreign countries. The academy lasts 10 weeks and consists of courses related
to Management Science, Behavioral Science, Law, Education, Forensic Science and
Health/Fitness. The FBI National Academy is located in the same facility as the
FBI Academy, where the Bureau trains its own employees, at Quantico, Virginia.

International
Law Enforcement Academy The International Law Enforcement Academy
(ILEA) is a multinational effort organized by the United States, the government
of Hungary and other international training partners. A broad spectrum of U.S.
federal law enforcement agencies and the Department of State are engaged in a
cooperative effort to provide assistance to our police colleages in the emerging
democracies through training. Other countries throughout the world are actively
supporting this intiative by providing instructors. Representatives from the European
Union and the council of Europe also have participated. In addition, the FBI conducts
extensive police training in foreign countries. This training not only aids the
foreign countries, but substantially helps the FBI investigate international crime
aimed at U.S. citizens and interests.
