Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Nelson P. Cohen announced today, April 17, 2006, that Ian Lee Pagel, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was indicted by a federal grand jury in Anchorage on a charge of bank robbery.
The one-count indictment named Pagel, age 33, as the sole defendant.
According to the indictment, Pagel was charged with robbing Credit Union One at 4020 Debarr Road on March 16, 2008. Previous court documents indicate that a photo from the bank surveillance video was made public to the media, and Pagel was identified by members of the community. He turned himself in to the Anchorage Police Department on March 19, 2008.
Assistant United States Attorney Retta Randall, who presented the case to the grand jury, indicated that the law provides for a maximum total sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. Pagel remains in jail since his arrest.
The FBI conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
