ANCHORAGE MAN PLEADED GUILTY IN FEDERAL COURT
TO BEING A FELON IN POSSESSION OF FIREARMS

Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Nelson P. Cohen announced that on September 11, 2007, Carl Richard Bowie, Jr., age 41, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of felon in possession of firearms.

In connection with the guilty plea, Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin White advised the court that on May 8, 2007, law enforcement officials conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by the defendant. The defendant was alone in the vehicle, had a warrant out for his arrest and a suspended driver’s license. In addition, the defendant, who had prior felony convictions, was in possession of a Glock 30 handgun.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy M. Burgess scheduled sentencing for November 26, 2007, at

2:00 p.m. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of 15 years to life in prison, a fine of up to $250,000.00, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Bowie continues to remain in custody pending sentencing.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force and the Anchorage Police Department conducted the investigation leading to the conviction in this case. SAUSA White is one of two prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who are funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
